VENT

So last week was was the start of rush season here at my school at the University of Pennsylvania. By no means do I consider myself a frat type of guy. However, I did rush anyway not knowing what to expect. The first two days of open rush were really fun. I met plenty of great guys that go to my school. One frat stood out in particular- Phi Psi. The guys were very friendly and down to earth. And from what I can tell, they always have each others’ backs and they were very tight knit. They weren’t your stereotypical frat with all the crazy parties and hardcore drinkers. They are more relaxed and chill-which I liked.

After open rush I was invited back for a closed rush event. We pre gamed at the chapter house and went with a bunch of brothers and rushees to play laser tag just north of northeast Philadelphia. On the way we played beer games on the bus which was pretty fun. The next day we played capture the flag, touch football, and tackle capture the flag at a park about 10 minutes away from the city. Later that night we had a flip cup tournament with the brothers. Sunday they had an “end of the world” night with a bunch of drinking stations with good drinks. These days were some of the funnest this school year. By this time, I was enjoying myself and was seriously considering pledging at this frat. It was the best frat for me even though I’m not the frat type. I thought about how I could live at the chapter house my sophomore year and get close to my pledge class and stuff.

So Tuesday comes and my friend (who is also rushing Phi Psi) asks me if I went to a dinner Monday night at Phi Psi. I realized that I wasn’t invited. That typically means that you are cut from a frat when they stop inviting you to events. Earlier today I messaged one of the brothers to clarify if I got cut, and I did.

Honestly, I wasn’t devastated, but I was really disappointed. I typically get what I want and sometimes I just don’t know how to react to rejection. Finding out that I got cut from this frat which I loved really hurt my ego and my self-esteem. When things like this happen I always think to myself “I’m not good enough” “No one likes me” “What could I have done better?” “I’m an idiot” and other negative things. It just really sucks how I gave my heart into something, and I couldn’t get the same love back. It really crushed me.

I talked with my RA and she helped comfort me in my distress offering her advice and support. After that I just cried it out in my dorm, took a shower, and finished my homework. But yeah, I’m still pretty sad to be honest. Feeling not good enough or feeling insufficient really hurt me. But for me, I think this is a sign from God telling me that He has better plans for me. Things didn’t go my way, but that won’t perturb me from keeping my chin up. I regret nothing- this rush experience was truly wonderful.

Thank you Danielle for a fantastic weekend at Brown University. It was nice taking a break from Penn and seeing someone from close to home. Hopefully you’ll come to Philly someone soon : #penntobrown #eastcoastchillin #friendship
